Uses in the Landscape

Shrubs are used widely in the landscape to form borders, screens, background plantings, and foundation plantings. They offer an especially attractive feature in that they change in color as seasons change. Shrubs are selected for the various effects that are created by their flower color, form, the fruit they bear, the color and shape of the stem, and the color and height of the foliage. Through careful selection, an interesting and attractive landscape design can be developed with deciduous shrubs, either alone or in combination with other plant materials. In today’s landscape world, there are a myriad of new cultivars on the market.

Green Tip: Planting Shrubs in the landscape helps reduce soil erosion, stabilizes soils, significantly reduces storm water runoff, and shades landscapes and structures to help minimize water and energy use. Shrubs provide oxygen, color, fragrance, and aesthetics to our environment in the forms of screening, borders, and special accents for background plantings.
