Lawn and Tree Fertilization

Lawn And Fertilization

The lawn is most often the centerpiece of a garden, the canvas against which the rest of the garden is pinter. For many of our customers this makes it worth all the mowing, feeding and grooming that a good lawn demands.
Lawns are a major part of most home landscapes. Basically, lawns are established for three reasons.

Lawn

They add beauty to the landscape. A well- kept lawn is very appealing and inviting.

They are used as play areas for sports such as baseball, football, basket ball, or for relaxation. Because sports are tough on lawns, it is important to select a lawn grass that can take wear.

They also provide an excellent cover to help control soil erosion while allowing the movement of air and water to roots of trees and shrubs in the soil below

Lawns are started in one of two ways: (1) seeding or (2) vegetatively by sodding or plug, strip, or sprig planting.

After the lawn has been seeded or planted vegetatively, care must be taken to keep it healthy. Proper lawn maintenance is dependent upon seven factors:

– planting the proper variety or species of grass.

– applying fertilizer and lime or sulfur at the proper time and in the proper form and amount.

– mowing to the proper height at the cor- rect time.

– watering properly.

– using chemicals for weed, insect, and disease control if necessary.

– using the lawn in such a way that the traffic is not too heavy.

– providing the proper amount of light

Fertilizer

If a healthy lawn is to be maintained, annual applications of a turf fertilizer are needed. Nitrogen is leached from soil and must be replaced regularly.

Fertilizer should be applied just before the active growing season. For cool season grasses, this is in the very early spring or better in the fall. (Two fall applications, 6 weeks apart, are best.) These grasses grow in spring and fall and are either dormant or very slow growers in the hot, dry summer months. To fertilize them in summer would support weeds that thrive in hot weather and could use the fertilizer for growth. Where grass remains active all summer, fertilizer should be applied at least once during this time.
