Pruning

Pruning regenerates the plant foliage, enhances the plant’s ability to cool the micro-environment around the plant, and encourages new growth that gives cultural aesthetic appeal for the observer.

PLANTS are pruned to:

– Remove dead, diseased, insect-infested, or broken branches. This keeps the plant healthy by removing any parts that might hinder further growth and stimulates new growth. -change the size or proportion of the plant. This is necessary when plants become over- grown in their landscape sites and some- times occurs when the mature height and growth rate of the plant are not considered before it is placed in the landscape.

– Develop a special form or shape. Hedge pruning and topiary and espalier work are examples of this type of pruning. Topi- ary is a practice used in formal gardens in which plant material is trimmed into different forms and shapes. Espalier is a pruning method of training plant mate- rial to grow flat against a trellis or wall.

– Remove wilted or dead flowers and seed pods. Wilted or dead flowers give plants an unattractive appearance and should be removed. Seed pods use the plant’s energy to develop seeds. Therefore, seed pods are removed to encourage further growth of the plant itself. For example, on rhododen- drons and lilacs, seed pods develop rather than new shoots; the seed pods must be pruned to encourage new growth.

– Rejuvenate a declining plant. New growth is stimulated by pruning older wood. After pruning, the plant usually produces better-quality flowers and develops a better form.

Prunning is an important aspect of the green industry. Timing is very important in the pruning process for survival of the plant as well as controlling growth as well as safe use of appropriate pruning tools.
